Natural Slate is a hard-wearing, watertight and durable tile and very much in keeping with local areas. Installing a natural slate roof is a highly skilled job, but using a natural slate is worth the investment especially when renovating a period property.
Britain boasts some of the best slates – including Burlington (blue-grey), Westmorland slates (green hued) from the Lake District, Cornish Delabole slate (dark-grey) and Scottish Ballachulish and Easdale slates.
Imported slate is also a popular choice and available in abundance. Spain is by far the largest exporter — providing nearly 75% of all slate worldwide. Chinese slate is among the cheapest natural slate available. Canadian slate is also a good alternative to Welsh slate.
